CHRISTMAS IN ESTONIA

Christmas time is still the most important holiday celebrated in Estonia. For Estonians, Christmas is a mixture of the traditional, the modern, the secular, and the religious. Like in other Nordic states, Estonia's celebration of Christmas mostly falls on Christmas Eve, however, Christmas season starts from Advent with people buying Advent calendars or lighting Advent candles. Each year on December 24, the President of Estonia declares Christmas Peace, which is a 350-year-old tradition in Estonia.

In Estonia, Christmas with its simple and pagan character of the festivities, the magic and mysticism combined with the sacred and spiritual. In the traditional folk calendar, Christmas tide began with St. Thomas's Day on December 21, and lasted until Epiphany on January 6

NOCHE DE PAZ ( SILENT NIGHT)
LYRIC

Noche de Paz, noche de amor,                           Silent night, holy night!
claro sol, brilla ya,                                             All is calm, all is bright.
y los ángeles cantando están.             Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
gloria a Dios, gloria al rey celestial.              Holy infant so tender and mild,
Duerme el niño Jesús.                                       Sleep in heavenly peace
Duerme el niño Jesús.                                       Sleep in heavenly peace
Noche de paz, noche de Amor,
al portal va el pastor
y entre pajas encuentra al señor,
es el verbo que carne tomó.
Duerme el niño Jesús.
Duerme el niño Jesús.
Noche feliz, noche de amor,
todo duerme en derredor.
nace el niño en un pobre portal
y María sonriendo está.
Duerme el niño Jesús.
Duerme  el niño Jesús.

Püha öö

This is a Estonian version of the popular and well-known Christmas carol, Silent Night, which was originally written in German.

Püha öö

Püha öö, õnnistud öö
kõik on maas, rahu sees
Joosep valvab ja Marial seal
hingab lapsuke põlvede peal
Maga, patuste rõõm!
Maga, patuste rõõm!

JÖULUINGEL -  ESTONIAN CHRISTMAS SONG (ERASMUS PROJECT)

Here comes a beautiful Estonian Christmas song. Jõuluingel means Christmas Angel. “On Christmas Eve, an angel visits each room ; Flittering there in the candle’s cascading glow ; You can scarcely see her with your eye ; But still you sense she wishes you well”. Beautiful, isn’t it ?

CHRISTMAS IN FRANCE

In France, Christmas is a time for family and for generosity, marked by family reunions, gifts and candy for children, gifts for the poor, Midnight Mass, and le Réveillon .

The celebration of Christmas in France varies by region. Most provinces celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December, which is a bank holiday. However, in eastern and northern France, the Christmas season begins on 6 December, la fête de Saint Nicolas , and in some provinces la fête des Rois * is one the most important holidays of the Christmas season. In Lyon, 8 December is la Fête de lumières, when Lyonnais pay hommage to the virgin Mary by putting candles in their windows to light up the city

French children put their shoes in front of the fireplace, in the hopes that Père Noël (aka Papa Noël ) will fill them with gifts. Candy, fruit, nuts, and small toys will also be hung on the tree overnight. In some regions there's also Père Fouettard who gives out spankings to bad children (sort of the equivalent of Santa Claus giving coal to the naughty)
